So, why do we have the rule? I’ve heard two theories: one is that leaving the cars running increases the odds that a person, operating on autopilot, will just drive off with nozzle in their tank, tearing the fuel line loose, and adding the extra step of having to start your car makes people less likely to do so. The other is that you could, potentially, spill fuel while fuelling up your car, and there’s a tiny, but non-zero, chance that they could create a vapor cloud that could then be ignited by a running engine.
