Among hundreds of rather mind-boggling ones a few stand out. While heading labor relations at a big hospital, one janitorial employee insisted on ‘grieving against another’ and the union and I were unable to explain convincingly that grievance procedures do not handle such matters, so eventually we held a ‘grievance meeting’ with me, the union rep, the ‘grievor’ and the person she wanted to ‘grieve against.’ Her beef was that in the washroom the other woman had flushed the toilet with her foot. We let her ramble fairly extensively about sanitation and finally I asked, “How do you know she did this?” The answer, “I crawled down under the panel and watched her.” We agreed I would make a note of the entire proceedings, both person’s actions, and keep it in my personal file for a year. That seemed to suit.
