At the high school where I worked at the time, we had a fund set up to help students who were in need. Teachers contributed a few dollars every month to this fund. Since our mascot was a bear, the fund was called the “Care Bear” fund. When I realized that Javier was not eating because he didn't have enough money to buy his food, I called his counselor to see what could be done for him. Not only did the counselor help him reapply for MediCal, but the school paid for his food from the Care Bear fund until MediCal kicked back in.
