So often, I would allow students to bring to the test a ‘crib card’ with no more than five (or maybe ten, depending) equations - but nothing else. No explanations or definitions or identifiers as to what the equations meant or applied to. Just having the equations would be reminders to the better-prepared students, and were of little value to the student who was not prepared.
