Ph.D.’s are, not to put a fine point on it, soul destroying. You have to not just want to do one you have to be a bit weird and obsessed, driven. All the things that go with someone who willingly destroys his personal life for the sake of a few letter after your name that don’t really help you much in life unless some company is directly after a Ph.D. If he just slips a piece of paper over the desk to you and says,” go and fill that out and hand it into HDR (or what ever your uni calls its administration). and begins to turn away. Run away, run away really fast because he doesn’t seem to be bothered in you and you are going to need his help just so much in the future its not funny.
