There’s a shred of truth to your dad’s statement. Old cars did have simple parts, and fewer of them. Fewer parts means there’s less to break. Also, the vehicles were built heavier. More steel, cast iron and on really old cars, going back to the 1940’s or earlier, the sheet metal gauge was heavier than today’s cars.
