Check the oil level and tire pressure at least once a week. You can usually head off serious problems if you are informed about the state of repair if you are informed ahead of time that there is a problem. Say that you check the oil, and one week it is down a quart, and the next week you check it and it is down another quart. Now common sense, and logic are going to tell you that this is not normal, and you will start to look for a leak. Or you could just keep driving it and not check anything and wait for the oil pressure light to go off and be stranded somewhere inconveniently.
