I’ve had students turn in creative writing assignments wherein they discuss their online boyfriend/girlfriend whom they’ve never met in real life. When the parents find out about it, they’re either shocked, or they want to “respect our child’s privacy.” We once had a meeting with a girl’s parents and the principal, because the girl hosted a sleepover with her friends and, during the sleepover, the girls made a fake online profile, pretended to be a boy from the school, and then started messaging one of their classmates that they knew had a crush on the boy.
